Do-it-yourself is having its heyday. With Pintrest as my witness, I’d swear that DIY home decor is one of the most popular activities right now. Perhaps this fascination with doing the work yourself can be attributed to the need to save money(hopefully!). Or, perhaps the fascination stems from the anticipation that when the project is complete, it will warrant bragging rights for the rest of your life. Whatever the reason, the DIY home décor bug has bit me, and I’m always trying something new.
Since we’ve moved into our first home, I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to decorate it. I’ve had my own room before, but now I have a whole house to decorate. This is a much more (daunting?) exciting task. As a young girl, I used to dream about how I would decorate my house whenever I got married. Of course, in my little girl dreams, money was no object and my dream husband let me spend whatever it took to make our home worthy of a magazine. Boy, am I glad I didn’t end up with that husband. He sounds like a mindless schmuck. Instead, I ended up with my frugal, wise, and discerning husband.
Even though that husband and I like to practice minimalist living, I don’t think that means living in a dreary minimalist house. A home is supposed to be a place where one feels comfortable and happy. Having a pleasant living space is important. Not as important as saving money, but still important. It is important for peace of mind, for developing traditions, and for having a space that emits the nostalgic feeling that only your home can evoke.
So, in order to begin the process of transforming our mobile home into a space of serenity, I began browsing through Pintrest for ideas, and ideas I found! In order to make my time on Pintrest worthwhile, I tried to only search for projects that were cheap to make and that I thought I could accomplish. There is no use in spending money on a project that costs too much or that is beyond my skill level. I don’t want waste the money or supplies.
The reason I was looking for DIY home decor is because our house was seriously lacking style and color. All of the walls in our 1980 mobile home are wood paneled. We love this because we didn’t have to repaint (a time and money pit), and it makes the house look uniform. However, when all of your walls are brown, it can look a bit dreary. In order to brighten up the place, I chose DIY home decor idea #1.
Cheap DIY Home Decor Idea #1: Cheery banner
The total cost for 8 of these is $3. I don’t know why you would ever need 8, but the supplies to make 1 will make 8 banners. So, the cost for my 1 banner was less than $0.38.
(Supplies: colorful paper $2, twine$1, scissors)
Step#1: I started by going to the Michaels store right by my work. There I picked out 5 sheets of paper that made me happy and looked great together.
Step#2: I folded the paper into four pieces and cut along the folds to get one square.
Step#3: I then folded and cut the square in half diagonally to make 2 triangles. I only used 1 triangle.
Step #4: The next step was to punch a hole in both ends of the triangle
Step #5: Next, I strung them onto the twine.
Step #6: Finally, I hung it up over our fireplace.
Cheap DIY Home Decor Idea #2: The printable
My next project was to figure out a cute picture to put inside a picture frame that was not a wedding picture of Jacob and I. Even though I love those pictures, it starts to look like a shrine if there aren’t some platonic pictures in the mix.
The next project that I attempted was inspired by a fellow blogger. She put the cute camera printable on her website. I simply printed it off and put it inside a picture frame. It was such a good idea, that I decided to make one of my own.
The Happily Ever After printable as well as the Recipe for Marriage printable are created by me for you to download. Enjoy!
